The Wedding Dress
(a song performed by 'Poor Tom' in ACT 2 March/April 2006 in Uxbridge, Ontario)
Gather memory scraps in time / transforming before my eyes / to satin, lace, organza stitched by hand / with long, long threads.
Layers build like years. / All trim, embroidery, beads, / 'til my baby's poised before my eyes, bestowed, / in waterfalls of spun love.
Haven't dressed her in so long / that it takes my breath away.
From pile-high hair, my veil cascades / past tomboy eyes, straight shoulders, / borrowed pearls. / The sylvan thread / that binds our souls unties.
Did my mother feel that blush? / Come time, will my daughter too?
Gather memory scraps in time / transforming before my eyes / to satin, lace, organza stitched by hand / with long, long threads.
